Facing the increasing energy demand around the world and the lack of resources to obtain it, we turn to look for new cost efficient, productive and environment friendly ways of obtaining energy. And this proposal is a practical application of these new tendencies to obtain energy. In this case using a constant energy source like our sun, combined with the simplicity of the beauty of a device such as it is a lamp.

The lamp is composed by solar panels that are supported by metal providing us with the advantages of durability and efficiency. Aside of these advantages, it offers a reduction on the quantity of material to be used to construct each lamp. In addition to an easy and fast assembly that maintains its quality and proportions.

I want to participate in the SPECIAL PROJECT 2008/2009, because it motivates each of us, the future students, to sit down and think about the present challenges related to our own field of study. While at the same time, it dares us to provide a solution to the new challenges that are arising in this era and the eras to come.

Passing over the explanation about my passion for art and design, and the prospect of interfering in a certain space, I chose to participate because of my actual situation as a graduated student and, most importantly, the theme that it’s directed to. Due to my situation in time and place, the opportunity of a master out of my country is extremely appealing, and bonding that with one of my favourite areas to start exploring, ecodesign and sustainability, made it quite perfect for me to involve myself in the special project.

During my experience of learning about Interior Design, I developed a special fondness about public spaces, like bars, restaurants, etc., which are the most harmful and polluting commercial places (along with the construction area and hairdressing too). Having said, my project was developed having this concern, the care for the environment, and mostly, taking part of the construction itself. Everything that can possibly be a project decision is planned to be less harmful, invasive, starting in construction decisions, materials, space distribution, natural lighting, …

The reason why this project is developed and explained by steps, is because I believe that a sustainable way of thinking and projecting sustainable interior design requires, not just a conclusion based on functional and aesthetic matters, but a logical line of analyses and judgements. A valid and legitimate result not only relays on sustainable and ecologic material research, but in the whole process of work that I tried to develop.

The place was chosen due to a personal preference, it consists of an old house situated in Lisbon, in which I find special potential and wish to convert, in this project, into a restaurant. An eco-friendly, environment concerned, mind opening and conceptual looking restaurant.

My Project consists on a food packaging system for expensive Colombian fruits. The packages I propose are made out of Fique, Colombia’s natural fiber, which is grown and treated in the country side. Both industrial and artisan products can be made from this fiber.

During the industrial process a leftover called “ripio” is produced. This material is often disposed of and not used in any productive way. It is burned in a caldron as a source of energy. This is not only very contaminating to the air, but it is like burning money or raw material that could be used productively to generate income.

100% fique products, or products combined with other natural material are 100% biodegradable. This makes my package system proposal environmentally friendly because no pollutant wastes would be generated. With the creation of a fique fiber/fique ripio left over cardboard we can achieve a material that will totally comply with packaging, handling, storing and protection requirements for food packaging, plus this material helps preserve smell and taste which is very important when packaging food.

Over 75.000 Colombian families live from fique harvesting. The design of new products with this natural material will help the families’ income and allow them to keep relying on this plantation as their means of support. Social responsibility is very important in our country and this is a great way to support it.

The packages illustrated on the following pages are for high priced fruits produced in Colombia. The main reason for choosing them is that they can easily absorb the packaging costs and enhance the fruits´ properties furthermore, the package provides the additional advantage of brand and producer recognition which is not often taken into account in these types of products.
