My Project consists on a food packaging system for expensive Colombian fruits. The packages I propose are made out of Fique, Colombia’s natural fiber, which is grown and treated in the country side. Both industrial and artisan products can be made from this fiber.

During the industrial process a leftover called “ripio” is produced. This material is often disposed of and not used in any productive way. It is burned in a caldron as a source of energy. This is not only very contaminating to the air, but it is like burning money or raw material that could be used productively to generate income.

100% fique products, or products combined with other natural material are 100% biodegradable. This makes my package system proposal environmentally friendly because no pollutant wastes would be generated. With the creation of a fique fiber/fique ripio left over cardboard we can achieve a material that will totally comply with packaging, handling, storing and protection requirements for food packaging, plus this material helps preserve smell and taste which is very important when packaging food.

Over 75.000 Colombian families live from fique harvesting. The design of new products with this natural material will help the families’ income and allow them to keep relying on this plantation as their means of support. Social responsibility is very important in our country and this is a great way to support it.

The packages illustrated on the following pages are for high priced fruits produced in Colombia. The main reason for choosing them is that they can easily absorb the packaging costs and enhance the fruits´ properties furthermore, the package provides the additional advantage of brand and producer recognition which is not often taken into account in these types of products.
